Healing Stone Massage

Experiencing a healing warm stone massage for the first time is a magical and literally sensational therapy. By the end of your session you feel like you are walking on clouds. Your body feels lighter than before, more agile and all those tense knots in your muscles practically melt away by the heat of the stones.

Stone therapy has been used for generations in many cultures across the globe. The traditional stone of choice has been the lava stones or known today as basalt. Along with crystals, shamans, medicine people and spiritual healers used stones in healing ceremonies. Each colour and stone reflects an energy, purpose, clearing and releasing effect on the client as it is being used.

In our modern day the stones are heated in a professional stone water heater to a specific temperature. The stones are applied to the body in a slow gliding motion so that the heat is quickly and deeply drawn deep into the muscles allowing deep relaxation and many healing benefits to take place.

A major effect of a warm stone therapy is increased circulation. The heat of the stones rapidly increases the functions of every cell in your body. This change of physiology promotes healing. The warm stone therapy widens blood vessels and increases blood flow to the skin relaxing superficial muscles and decreasing muscle spasm. It can also reduce stiffness in joints and has the ability to block pain receptors thus leaving you completely submerged in an euphoric state of relaxation.

History of hot stone use

Hawaii - Kahunas used lava stones in healing treatments by wrapping them in leaves and placing them on the body.

Russia - there is a tradition where they would use the stones at the bottom of their baths for healing and warming properties.

Japan - Monks would use the smooth black stones to keep their abdomens warm after eating a meal.

China - used the heated stones to relieve tired muscles.

Native Americans - used the stones in sweat lodges and the women would use sun heated stones to relieve their menstrual pain.

How will I use the stones?

Although you can experience a warm/hot stone massage all on its own at various salons and clinics, I have chosen to incorporate the stones throughout the Lomi Lomi. This intensifies the already hypnotic Lomi Lomi to another level of relaxation for the recipient.

The large placement stones are initially placed strategically on the body to warm up various major muscle groups and internal organs. Throughout the massage session, the stones are applied in various sections using the usual Lomi Lomi movements.

Adding the stones into your session will certainly leave you feeling like a new person, give you an added sense of calm and total bliss.

What type of stones are used?

There are many types of stones to chose from for this type of massage therapy. I have personally chosen to use Blue Pearl Australian granite along with 'working stones' of basalt. Apart from the obvious beauty of the stone, granite has fantastic thermal properties which assist in keeping the heat for the 'placement stones'. These stones resonated with me also as they are Australian source and made. The energy of the granite is grounding and calming.

I do also use the basalt stones as 'working stones'. The basalt doesn't necessarily retain the heat as long which is a minor detail. The basalt stones I have personally chosen fit perfectly into my hands to make it easy to maneuver them over your body. As they have been naturally tumbled over millions of years, their natural curve also assist with massaging your muscles.
